USA Wrestling has announced its men’s freestyle lineup for the 2004 Titan Games, Built by Home Depot, in Atlanta, Ga., June 18-20.
All seven 2004 Olympic Team members will compete at the event.
The Titan Games will be the final chance for wrestling fans to see the 2004 U.S. Olympic Teams in all three styles compete before the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. USA Wrestling will announce the women’s freestyle team on Tuesday and the Greco-Roman team on Wednesday. This will be the first Olympic Games to feature women’s wrestling.
“Our team is very excited to compete in this event,” stated USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach and 2004 Olympic Coach Kevin Jackson. “This is a great way for us coaches to see what kind of things we need to work on just before the Olympic Games. Georgia and Spain will provide good tests for us.”
The team will be led by 2003 World silver medalists Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Sanderson has won three U.S. Nationals titles and earned his first birth on the Olympic Team with his dramatic win at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
McCoy was an Olympian in 2000, placing fifth. He also placed fourth in the 1998 and 2001 World Championships, and remains as one of the top U.S. medal hopefuls at the Olympic Games.
2001 World bronze medalist Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) will compete at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Williams has won four World Cup titles (2000-03) and placed fourth at the 1999 World Championships.
Also on the U.S. roster are Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Both wrestlers placed fifth in the 2003 World Championships.
Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) will compete at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Guerrero placed seventh in the 1999 World Championships and 10th in the 2003 World Championships. He was also a 2003 World Cup gold medalist.
Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC), the third former Oklahoma State wrestler on this year’s Olympic Team, will also compete. Kelly won a silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games and also compete in the 2003 World Championships.
The coaches of the U.S. men’s freestyle squad will be 2004 Olympic coaches Jackson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Bobby Douglas (Ames, Iowa), Tom Brands (Iowa City, Iowa) and Zeke Jones (Morgantown, W.Va.).
Wrestling will again be one of the featured sports at the Titan Games, along with boxing, fencing, weightlifting, judo, taekwondo and shot put. Philips Arena is serving as the competition venue and Centennial Olympic Park is serving as the backdrop for the shot put.
Wrestling will be contested on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20.
The Titan Games will feature a “USA versus the World” format in dual and triangular meets. In men’s freestyle and men’s Greco-Roman, the teams competing against the United States will be the Republic of Georgia and Spain. In women’s freestyle, the opponents will be Canada and China.
In men’s freestyle, this field will feature the No. 1 and No. 2 teams from the 2003 World Championships along with Spain. Georgia won the World team title, followed by runner-up United States. It was one of the closest team races in history.
Individual session tickets are available through Ticketmaster.
There are two packages available for purchase for wrestling fans. Package A features a $120 all-session floor pass, with only 100 available. This includes VIP Hospitality, matside seating and a chance to meet and greet wrestling legends.
